As a foster parent, your role is to introduce our mutters to a new life in Canada and what it means to live on another side of the world, under a dry roof, with a warm bed and a loving family. Foster homes offer time for dogs to decompress and for their true colours to shine.

Fostering may entail anything from simple commands and potty training to more extensive cases for shy dogs, how to walk on a leash, where to sleep at night and how to trust humans. You will also be responsible for keeping an open line of communication with your foster coordinator to provide regular updates on their progress, as well as bringing your mutter to vet appointments booked by PMR (as needed).

Ultimately, placing dogs in foster care allows for homeless dogs to transition into better-socialized pets in a safe and secure environment. Some of our puppies and adult dogs may have never lived inside a home, so chances are they will not be house trained or know how to walk on a leash.

Anytime we bring a dog into our care, we have done so based on the assessment of their promising qualities, with the understanding that it may require an additional amount of time for those redemptive qualities to reappear. The sudden environmental change they experience can scare them and it may take time for them to display the sweet, loving, playful, happy-go-lucky behaviour we chose them for. Patience and understanding will be key in successfully transitioning your foster mutter to be adoption ready.

Fostering is both a challenging and rewarding experience.

Steps to become a PMR Foster Parent:

  1. Read the FAQs

  2. Fill out an application

  3. If you are selected, we will schedule an interview. If we move past the interview stage, we will conduct a home check and call your references.

  4. If approved past the above stages, you will be assigned to a foster coordinator and provided with a thorough foster manual to read which includes everything from training tips, health considerations and our rules & guidelines.

  5. Once we have a planned intake, we will reach out to confirm your availability. As a small rescue, we pull our mutters from shelters depending on the number of foster homes we have available. Please keep in mind that a timely response will be the difference in how many lives we can save.

  6. Once you have been paired with a foster dog, you will be contacted to arrange pick-up/drop-off time for the dog as well as supplies. We provide all basic supplies including crate, martingale collar, leash, slip lead and food. We do not have backup fosters, if you back out your dog may not be able to come. Please ensure you are ready for this commitment.
